Bluestone is on a mission to fight the use of single-use plastic and with the support of Refill Wales, we have been encouraging our guests and staff to refill and reuse water bottles for well over a year!
Bye, bye plastic water bottles!
From the 16th of July 2021, you will no longer find single-use water bottles on sale in any of Bluestone’s outlets and to encourage you to choose reusable water bottles, we have doubled our refill stations around the resort to six, providing you with drinking water for free.
This move alone will help us save an additional 25,000+ plastic bottles going to waste each year and will not only benefit the environment and wildlife by reducing the volume of single-use plastic generated by the resort but, will also help us get closer to our goal of being a net-zero business.
Why you should be grabbing a reusable bottle
The UK has some of the highest quality drinking water in the world, meaning there’s less reason to purchase water. At Bluestone, 60% of our tap water comes from a natural borehole – providing high-quality, natural drinking water for staff and guests absolutely free.
It’s cheaper! When you buy a bottle of water, an estimated 90% of the price is for the bottle alone. A reusable bottle will only cost you once, and you can use it as many times as you want!
Refills at Bluestone are free. We’re not going to charge you for water, so you’ll be saving pennies in your pocket while keeping plastic out of our oceans.
90% of bottled water brands contained microplastics (tiny plastic particles), according to a global study. A recent study found there is so much single-use plastic in our food and drink that the average person could be ingesting approximately five grams of plastic a week – that’s the equivalent of one credit card!
It takes 8 litres of water to create a 1 litre water bottle – that doesn’t seem right!
Helps combat climate change. It’s estimated plastic production and incineration of plastic waste give rise globally to approximately 400 million tonnes of CO2 a year.
Protecting the wildlife. The Pembrokeshire National Park is a haven for rare and protected wildlife, sadly though our plastic consumption affecting them too. It’s estimated 90% of seabirds have plastic in their stomachs.
Plastic bottles, caps, and lids are the most commonly found single-use items on Europe’s beaches. Protect Pembrokeshire and Wales’ coastline by going reusable.
It’s estimated more than 150 million tonnes of plastics have accumulated in the world’s oceans.
Dates for your Diary
16th June – World Refill Day
World Refill Day is a global campaign to celebrate and amplify the amazing businesses, brands, communities, and individuals that are leading the way when it comes to scaling reuse.
To celebrate this important day in 2021, in partnership with Refill Cymru, Bluestone launched our campaign to reuse and refill water bottles, while also raising awareness of the organisation’s global campaign to live with less plastic. It’s estimated that 400,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated in Wales each year, according to recent research from Wrap Cymru, and we’re part of the fight to reduce this to zero!
16th July 2021 - Bluestone ended the sale of single-use Water Bottles
It was goodbye to single-use bottled water from the shelves of our outlets! To celebrate we added three new water refilling stations on the resort where you can fill your reusable bottle with natural, clean Bluestone water for free!
The First Refill Nation
It’s not just Bluestone who are committed to the refill campaign – in 2018 the Welsh Government unveiled their ambition to become the First “Refill Nation”.
Over the past two years the Welsh Government and water companies Dŵr Cymru and Hafren Dyfrdwy, have supported Refill Cymru in their efforts to substantially increase the availability of high- quality drinking water and have set up over 60 Refill Schemes have been set-up in Wales and can be found in the majority of major urban areas including here in Pembrokeshire.
Meet Refill Cymru
Reduce, Reuse, Refill, Repeat!
The Refill campaign was created in 2015 by the environmental group City to Sea, in an effort to connect more people to free drinking water as a way of tackling the problem of single-use plastic bottles. It has since grown into an international campaign to ensure everyone can choose to reuse wherever they shop, eat and drink.
