Garn Fawr and Strumble Head Coast Walk

The Garn Fawr rocky volcanic outcrop will give you magnificent views of the north Pembrokeshire coast, taking in one of the county’s most spectacular Iron Age forts.

Nearby is Strumble Head, which is worth a trip all of its own in the autumn - the best time of year to spot the sea birds.

It’s a remote spot and often skipped by visitors to Pembrokeshire, but if you can make the time for a trip you’ll be rewarded with some of the county’s great undisturbed views.

There’s a handy car park at Garn Fawr which is where this walk starts and finishes.

Walking Guide

Walk time: This one will take you about 30-minutes - it’s just over a mile so ideal for building into a day out in the north of the county.

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance from Bluestone: The Garn Fawr car park is about a 45-minute drive

Toilets: No

Parking: Garn Fawr has its own car park

Food and Drink: Garn Fawr is quite remote but there are plenty of options in Fishguard which is a 15-minute drive away. It’s a half an hour drive back to Bluestone from Fishguard.

1. Start out on the path leading from the car park, and head to the right when you reach a junction, leading you up the hill.

2. You’ll soon see the OS trig point marking the Garn Fawr viewpoint.

3. You’ll spot a gap in the stone wall on your right - pop through there and climb up to the summit for some spectacular views. Just below, you’ll spot the old First World War lookout point, which has fine panoramic views.

4. Come back down by the steps which you’ll spot at the lookout and rejoin the path you were on earlier but a little further on - you’ll be surrounded by the banks and ramparts of the Iron Age fort.

5. Head to the right and the path drops steeply towards the youth hostel at Pwll Deri. Turn left at the junction, following the path as it skirts the hill back towards the car park.

6. Follow the path over two stiles and some stone steps. Don't cross a third stile; remain above the wall. The path climbs briefly behind a small cottage before returning to the car park.
