1. Barafundle Bay

Distance: 15.5 miles from Bluestone
Postcode: SA71 5LS

Why should we go?

Beautiful soft golden sand and crystal clear waters, it’s often voted as one of the best beaches in the world. Barafundle Bay is a natural haven nestled on the south coast of Pembrokeshire. You have to wander through some woodland to reach it, but stepping on the beach feels like arriving at a paradise island.

 

 

2. Manorbier Castle

Distance: 12.2 miles from Bluestone Postcode: SA70 7SY

Why should we go?

A Norman castle that stands right on the coast, perched on the cliffs in the historic village of Manorbier. Steeped in folklore, explore the grounds and be surrounded by fairytale turrets, looming great halls, and centuries of history.

 

 

3. Newgale Beach

Why should we go?

With two miles of golden sands to explore, this beach is perfect for surfers and sandcastle builders.

It’s a Blue Flag beach with lots of facilities including a café, pub and surf shop.

 

 

4. Pentre Ifan

Why should we go?

Dating back to the Neolithic period, Pentre Ifan is an amazing example of a megalithic site and the most popular in Wales. Pentre Ifan is a splendid burial chamber with a huge capstone delicately poised on three uprights. This remarkable, atmospheric site is matched by spectacular rural views in every direction.

 

 

5 and 6. Stack Rocks and the Green Bridge of Wales

Why should we go?

This natural arch and rock pillars have been carved over hundreds of years to create an iconic part of the Pembrokeshire coast. The arch is roughly 80 feet high (24m) high and has a span of 66 feet (20m).

The upper surface of the arch is covered with vegetation, giving it the name 'Green Bridge'. The road to the car park passes through an army tank range - call this number to check if the way is open: 01437 776499.

 

 

7. St Govan’s Chapel

Distance: 17.2 miles from Bluestone
Postcode: SA71 5DR

Why should we go?

This little chapel is built into a gap in the cliffs by a Hermit who encountered pirates on his way to Wales from Ireland so legend would have it. Count the steps on the way down and on the way back up, you’ll never reach the same number. To get to the chapel, you can start your walk from the Bosherton Lily Ponds, going via Broad Haven Beach and the coast path to arrive at the tiny chapel.

 

 

8. Bosherston Lily Ponds

Why should we go?

A beautiful walk, lined with nature and photo opportunities. Explore the dunes and pools of the Mere Pool Valley, admiring the thousands of lily pads and crossing the causeways as you go. At the end of the walk, you’ll be rewarded by the golden sands of Broad Haven South!

 

 

9. Pembroke Castle

Why should we go?

Built around 1093, Pembroke Castle has a fascinating history including being the birthplace of future king Henry Tudor in 1457. Make your way around the Great Keep, Dungeon Tower, and marvel at the Great Map – the largest map of Wales in the world and the largest painting in the UK.

 

 

10. Carew Castle

Distance: 6.6 miles from Bluestone

Why should we go?

2000 years of history, lots of activities during the school holidays, and a nice looped walk around the tidal millpond. Carew Castle is only a short hop from Bluestone and has a year-round program of entertainment, not to mention plenty of ghost stories!

 

 

11. Freshwater West

Why should we go?

A great place to watch surfers catching the waves, this beach starred in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part one and two providing the backdrop to Shell Cottage.

Why should we go?

Helping to keep us safe around the Coast. Tenby is one of the busiest lifeboat stations in the UK, get up close to the Lifeboat, you might even see it launch thanks to the work of the fantastic volunteer crew. Plus there’s the wonderfully picturesque town of Tenby to explore, which should be on every Bluestone holiday list!

With stunning views out over Carmarthen Bay, it’s easy to see why one of Wales’ greatest poet chose to make this his home. The Boathouse terrace offers wonderful views of the Taf estuary and the Gower beyond, and you can imagine Thomas working away in the Writing Shed above the Boathouse with its remarkable and inspiring views of three estuaries.

A trip to Britain’s smallest and Pembrokeshire’s only city is a must during your visit. Take a walk around the Cathedral of our Patron Saint and enjoy this most peaceful and picturesque city.
